Cinderella’s Courage

An Essay By, Donna M. Monnig

We’ve all heard the story of Cinderella, daughter of a well-respected man, forced into servitude after his death by her evil stepmother and wicked stepsisters, rescued by a dashing prince to live happily ever after as a princess in a palace. What little girl hasn’t seen Disney’s Cinderella and been enchanted by the magical story of the servant girl who becomes a princess?  What child hasn’t been captivated by her charm?

Some people today, especially staunch feminists, say that Cinderella represents the oppression of women and is a negative influence on young girls, that Cinderella never did anything worthwhile and that the story teaches our daughters to be dependent on men. That is one way to look at it; however, there is always more than one way to look at things. Another way to look at Cinderella is that she was a…

Watching DragonBall in Japanese

Hello eveyone!

For the past two days I’ve been watching DragonBall in Japanese. I wanted to watch it  because I’d never actually seen the original version before and frankly it’s become one of those series where I can watch it in both English and Japanese. When I first heard Bulma’s voice I was like “OMG, it’s Mimi from Digimon” but instead she’s Ukyo from Ranma 1/2 which still took me by surprise. I thought that Goku sounded like a monkey, which I guess kind of fits since he is an alien that turns into a giant monkey. Overall, I’ve got to say that I love it. When DragonBall was really big in America while I was a little kid, I didn’t get into it until the Buu Saga. By that time I was in middle school and I kind of regret not being into it before then. I’ve now finished what may or may not officially be known as the Pilaf Saga or episodes 1-12 and I’ve officially started what I call the Roshi Saga or at least the training for the Tenkaiichi Budokai Saga. A couple of things that bothered me though. When I watch or read anything I tend to look at it in depth and try to analyze it hence why I’m questioning certain aspects of the show. First, Oolong the pig was expelled from the Southern School of Transformation when he did something dirty to the teacher. Why didn’t he just go to another school? Second, concerning his transformations, Oolong says that he can assume any form but his strength remains the same. If so, how was he able to terrorize those villagers by transforming into larger beings? If his strength stays the same, his footsteps shouldn’t have the power to make the ground shake the way it did. Third, why can Puar fly? That’s all I’ve got for now. Feel free to comment as you like.
